Overview

Much of government work requires skills in business, management, IT and communication. Most applicants must be US citizens, preference given for veterans. Typical staff positions require some post secondary education; hiring for specific position is sometimes based on having established a previous area of specialization. Management skills are highly valued and are the basis for promotion to supervisory levels. Ability to work in a team environment is critical. A 2009 government study found that most new hires in the stimulus jobs will come in five major areas: 1. security, 2. enforcement/compliance (which includes inspectors, investigators, police officers, airport screeners, and prison guards), 3. medical and public health fields, 4. engineering, sciences, and program management/administration and 5. accounting, budget and business. Actively hiring at all levels.
